The orangutan sleeps in a nest and is an expert
nest-builder. Each evening-and noon-it sleeps in
a new nest, built from scratch in 5-6 minutes.
It first finds a wide tree, and places a foundation
of thick branches on it. Smaller twigs are placed
on top of that, followed by a ‘mattress’ woven
from leaves. ‘Blankets’, ‘pillows’, roofs and ‘bunk
beds’ are often fashioned from twigs and leaves
as well.
After observing its mother closely, a 6-month-
old orangutan begins practicing nest-building.
At the age of 3, it is a skilled nest-builder.
The orangutan is a close relative of the ape
family, and is the smartest animal in the
world. It has a large memory capacity and can
compute, play complex games and analyze
practical problems.
Researchers who study orangutans in
conservation centers have observed them
independently rowing boats, washing
themselves with soap, laundering clothing,
driving bikes, playing the guitar, climbing
a ladder, using tools, and so forth. A zoo in
Atlanta set up a touch-screen computer for the
orangutans to play games with.
