Winter months are spent in warm wa-
ters, where the humpback gives birth to
and raise its calves. At birth, a calf is 20 feet
long and weighs 2 tons!
In the beginning, the mother will push
her child up to the water’s surface to
breathe. A calf drinks its mother’s milk-
which is pink in color and contains 50 per-
cent fat-up to the age of six months. Over
the next six months, its food is a mix of
mother’s milk and krill. After that, it is in-
dependent and eats only krill.
A spectacular feat of the humpback
whale-which attracts boatloads of tour-
ists worldwide-is its leap out of the water.
Often, the humpback whale will keep on
‘performing’ many times over. It energet-
ically ‘throws’ its body out of the water and
lands on its back.
The humpback whale sings long, loud
and complex songs, for an average of 10-
20 minutes. Occasionally, it sings for 24
consecutive hours.
